Are Cellphones the Justified Cause of Fuel Stations Fires?

While studies by Wireless Devices Industry indicates hints about the existence of theoretical evidence of such devices sourcing an electrical spark: There is no evidence of a cellphone resulting a fire when operated by motorists around flammable materials such as gas.

Scientific testing hasn't shown any link between Wireless phones and Flammable vapors

"As for cell phones and other modern gadgets, their risk of creating a hazardous spark is virtually none. They use very little electricity, hardly more than your digital watch. The service station would be on sounder legal ground if they provided ground wires (no pun intended) or some sort of way to ground vehicles" says Otteray Scribe



Therefore; Wireless phone Manufactures and Most gas stations will just install "X Cellphone Zones" FCC warning as a precaution as in Journal of electrostatics.
There exists more potential threats of fire sparks for example automobiles and static charges as outlined in electrostatic physics.


Unlike recent warnings about cell phones igniting fires at gas pumps — a case of which has never been confirmed — the static-induced fires are well documented and information on what is electrostatic force and sparking provided. Could be even some of the private cars for sale at the Gas stations.

Most of the globally reported Gas stations fires hold reference to such activities:



  • Nearly all have involved the motorists getting back in their vehicle while the nozzle was still pumping fuel, when finished and they went back to pull the nozzle out; the fire started, as a result of static: Most men never get back in their vehicle until completely finished. This is why they are seldom involved in these types of fires.
  • It is the vapors that come out of the gas that cause the fire, when connected with static charges.
  • Fires that occurred before, during or immediately after the gas cap was removed and before fueling began.
  • It is necessary to NEVER get back into your vehicle while fueling. If you absolutely HAVE to get in your vehicle while the gas is pumping, make sure you get out, close the door TOUCHING THE METAL, before you ever pull the nozzle out. This way the static from your body will be discharged before you ever remove the nozzle; the main thing you need to keep in mind to understand this is that gasoline is not explosive. Gasoline vapors are explosive.
  • An electrostatic charge is generated through friction between clothing and the car seat to such an extent that electrostatic discharges to the vehicle body or to the filling nozzle are possible, especially if the motorist is wearing rubber-soled shoes.
  • Most women are more likely to ignite a gas station, because they leave and re-enter their cars after they start pumping the fuel.
  • Cold, dry air causes more static electricity, and gasoline vapors naturally are released during fueling, "Combine that with the fabric friction caused by people getting in and out of their cars when filling their tanks, and you have the potential for static sparks
  • After fueling, motorists should touch the metal part of their vehicle doors far away from the gas nozzles before returning the nozzles to the pumps. That should discharge any built-up static electricity before the next fueling
  • Rubbing against fabric creates an electric charge just like the one that causes a shock when you touch something metal after shuffling.


Do you know how to use a portable fuel container safely?

Portable fuel containers have also been claimed as one of the leading causes of static-caused fires:
Even many safety conscious people may not be aware of the proper way to fill a portable fuel container.Every time you pump gasoline, a charge of electricity builds up on gasoline as it flows through a pipe or hose and this charge takes several seconds to several minutes to dissipate after the gasoline has reached the tank or container.

Grounding is essential to avoid any build-up of static electricity that could pose a risk; Grounding, simply put, provides a path for an electric current to discharge safely
That risk is avoided when you pump gasoline into your car, because both the gasoline dispenser and the vehicle are grounded.

"But a portable fuel container may not be grounded. For safety, you need to place the container on the ground and fill it on the ground.
Placing the container on the ground makes it easier for the electrical charge to escape."
Heating units inside the motor home might have contributed to the fire.

Tips for safe refueling:

  • If you must re-enter your vehicle while refueling, discharge the static electricity by touching a metal part of the outside of your car away from the filling point before touching and removing the gas nozzle.
  • Do not go back into your vehicle when refueling, regardless of whether you use the nozzle's hold-open latch:Used cars for sale  are no exception.
  • Stay near your vehicle's fueling point when using a self-serve station even if you you like to imply "value my car"
  • Always turn your engine off before refueling.
  • Let the fuel dispenser shut off automatically and leave the nozzle in the tank opening for six to eight seconds so the gasoline in the tank neck can settle down and any remaining gas in the nozzle can drip out of it into the tank.
  • When filling a portable container always place it on the ground, and don't move away from it until you're through and the cap is back in place. Frequent movements generate static charges between your body and the dry air.
  • Never smoke, light matches or use a lighter while refueling.
  • To avoid spills, do not overfill or top off your gas tank.
  • Now most pumps or at least many of them these days have vapor recovery systems at the nozzle; One gallon of gasoline, fully vaporized, is equivalent to fourteen sticks of dynamite going off.
  • Also, smoking is not the smartest thing to do either, unless you have a death wish.
  • Breathing in those fumes is far more likely to be detrimental. You should keep your kids away from the nozzle while pumping. Their immune systems are not fully developed, and they are in a high risk group like pregnant women... So this is why pregnant women are advised not to pump fuel, and why everyone else should stand a foot or so back from the nozzle, but not otherwise take your attention off of it.
  • Today, some fuel tank filler necks are made of non-conductive plastics with a metal trapdoor opening. Some are connected to mold fiberglass fuel tanks.
  • Tires are being made with less carbon (conductive) and more silica (non-conductive) :While browsing car finder,shop online for such car properties and this will hold in car valuation in case you would like to have private cars for sale.

If you are worried about static electricity in your car, and have a fabric seats you can get a dryer sheet and rub it on the seats. Also when getting out, ground yourself by touching the car, but if you shut the door before touching the pump then you're more than likely grounding yourself without knowing it.You're safe .
